Chapped lips are one of life’s little irritations. If you ignore them, those chapped lips can become cracked lips and be more than a small irritation. They can hurt and bleed. Fortunately, there are many remedies for chapped and cracked lips.
Causes
Cracked or chapped lips have a number of causes. Your lips are susceptible to dryness because they do not produce oils, as other parts of the body do. A lack of drinking water or involvement in physical activity can cause the lips to develop a dry feeling.
The weather can also affect the moisture in your lips. Extended exposure to the sun can dry your lips, as can exposure to a strong, cold wind.
Physical aliments such as anemia can also cause dry lips. If not treated, your lips can become progressively worse, leading to bleeding and discomfort.
Treatments
If your lips are chapped, you have a variety of treatment options. Lip balm marketed by a number of manufacturers are available over the counter. Application of these products will add moisture to and protect your lips. Petroleum jelly and cocoa butter are two additional products that can help.
Home treatments are also available. Honey applied to the lips can soothe the dryness. Staying hydrated and keeping the air in your home moist can help, as well. Use a home humidifier when necessary.
When your lips become dry, it’s normal to want to lick them. But your saliva will quickly dry, and your lips will feel more chapped. If your dry and chapped lips continue to worsen, consult your physician to determine if this is a sign of a more serious health condition.
